Buying a Lot

Well, pretty much the coolest thing ever just happened to me. Because of a mistake in the paperwork, I now own a patch of grass on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Most people don’t realise that the MCG is actually made up of 100 different properties, which are all leased out for games of cricket and football. So, how did I come to own one of these pieces of land? I’ll tell you, right about now.

It all began when I went to get the best conveyancing lawyers to help me in purchasing a beautiful property in Yarra Park. I was to purchase “Lot 37”, which should have gone perfectly smoothly. Somehow, somebody stuffed up the paperwork (or perhaps it was the printer), and it turned out that the documents were for the purchase of “Lot 38”, which just so happens to be the patch of grass in the goalsquare of the Punt Rd end of the MCG. Now, I know what you’re thinking. How could I have bought that land when the document would require the signature of the actual owner? As it turns out, the owner of Lot 37 was also the owner of Lot 38. Therefore, the purchase was totally valid.

I’m just amazed at how well this turned out. Sure, I don’t have a house to live in, but this opens up so many possibilities. Imagine if I’d gone to a conveyancing firm in the Cheltenham area, as I’d originally planned. If I’d done that, this probably never would have happened. I’m so lucky.

What I’m thinking is that I’ll start building on my new land. By the time the next football season comes around, they won’t be able to play games at the MCG. They will then have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to buy Lot 38 off me. Is that evil? Probably. But when I’m getting paid millions for this patch of turf, I don’t think I’ll care too much.
