Adelaide Mechanic Mastery

“It just doesn’t make sense, does it?” Vai said as they sat in the local coffee shop to debrief. “Why would they change their tactics so drastically all of a sudden?”

Maphira tapped her fingers on the edge of the table, unable to contain her frustration. “Because this was all just a diversion to get us away from Melbourne. I don’t know why the Captain thought we’d learn anything from this. Now our trip home isn’t until later tonight, giving the Mechanists a perfect opportunity to strike.”

Vai bit her lip, seemingly unconvinced. “It feels bigger than that. If they wanted to get us away from somewhere, surely they would have picked a place further than Adelaide.” She paused, pulling out her notepad. “I want to review what we learned.”

Waving her hand dismissively, Maphira gave her permission to take the lead.

“So, these two guys come claiming that they are looking for a logbook service near Lockleys. Right next to the airport, yeah? Why not draw us further away? They mention off-hand that the Conclave of Mechanists is looking for some new members and suggest a move to Melbourne. When the owner tells them they aren’t interested, the men actually get brake pad replacement. Doesn’t that sound weird to you?”

Maphira shrugged. “It’s very weird, but at this point, I’ve just accepted that you can’t anticipate what these guys are going to do. One minute they’re getting engine repairs, the next they need an air conditioning regas or a roadworthy certificate. There’s no reason for any of it.”

“But what if there was?”

Narrowing her eyes, Maphira said, “What do you mean?”

“Mai, it’s a code. These mechanics, I think they’re trying to tell us something.”

Vai wrote something on her notepad, then showed it to Maphira. She had rearranged the words of the two services: logbook service near Lockleys and brake pad replacement. Now they read: Break padlock near Ley’s. Book log replacement service.

The name of the coffee shop they were sitting in?

Ley’s.

“You are one brilliant detective. You know that, right?”

Vai only smirked back.
