Help with Legal Jargon

I’ve never had to seek legal aid for anything, really. I’m inexperienced in the realm of legal aid, finding a lawyer, using a lawyer, understanding the law…although that’s what a lawyer is for, I suppose. Anyway, soon I have to go into the family court, and I only have a glancing knowledge of what the family court actually is. I know they deal with cases that aren’t criminal, like divorce and…things to do with children.
See, this is the kind of thing you don’t ever think you’ll have to be involved in. And I’m not involved, directly. I have to be there on behalf of my cousin. I won’t say for what, because I’m not sure if I’d be breaking some kind of confidentiality clause…ugh, see this is the reason I need a family lawyer. For example, the phrase ‘alimony payments’ was just thrown out casually in the last court session, and I’m certainly not going to stand up in the middle of court with my hand up and ask the judge exactly what that means. It’s sort of embarrassing for one thing. And when I’m sitting there outside the courtroom, al of them are rushing past looking so busy. I don’t want to be that person. Y’know, the clueless one in the sea of learned folks. If a person works in Dandenong as a domestic violence lawyer, does that make them more or less likely to answer questions? I’m confused. Maybe I should just suck it up and ask the next person who passes.
Your human laws are curious. Notably, many of them do not apply to my kind, as we have no real intent and we do as we are programmed. You would do well to remember this. – Robot Wizard
