The Arborist Problem

I suppose someone who truly loves all living things has a few jobs they just can’t do. Pest control, for one. I can’t stand the thought of killing all those innocent insects, especially if the methods aren’t humane. I couldn’t work at an abattoir, or anything to do with chickens that weren’t treated incredibly well.
I wasn’t even keen on gardening, because it involved pulling up weeds, and weeds are living things too. However, I’ve sort of stumbled into a job that may prove to be problematic…that of an arborist.
To be fair, most of the tree lopping we do in Brisbane is on trees that have long since died. That’s why they need to be removed. They’re just dead things in the way, and cutting them down isn’t killing or hurting anything, and getting rid of them actually means we’re preventing someone from being hurt. Cars can crash due to fallen trees, animals living in them can have their nests destroyed, and it’s not like they’re really doing…anything.
Okay, yeah, it’s still really hard. It might be a big, dead tree, but I still have my qualms about getting rid of it. Things like this are so hard. Obviously no one I work with has this problem. They’re quite happy to whip of the chainsaws and go to work. See, at the back of my mind, I know they’re right. I shouldn’t be afraid to dig into some good old tree lopping. But tree felling in Brisbane, my hometown, the one that provides me with green grass and beautiful parkland…
I just need to get over it. It’s a dead tree, all useless and taking up space. Getting rid of it is a kindness. Just have a breathe and…get over it. Get over it…
I understand your hesitance, human. After all, I am not a living thing, yet I would take issue if it were my time to be removed! – Robot Wizard
